COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Business users of Wi-Fi hotspots in Europe exceeded those in North America for the first time in the second quarter 2008, iPass Inc. reported in its iPass Mobile Broadband Index study. Growth overall in such hotspots increased by 46 percent from the first half of 2007 to the first half of 2008.

Europe's growth year over year was 89 percent, and the region now accounts for 47 percent of global business use of hotspots. This compares to 45 percent in North America, down from a 56 percent share the year before. North America's growth over the period was only 17 percent.

The top three cities for business use of Wi-Fi were London, Singapore, and Tokyo. The only nations with multiple cities in the top ten were the U.S., with Cicago, New York, Seattle, Houston, and San Francisco; and Germany, with Munich and Bonn.

U.S. users of 2.5G and 3G technologies for data traffic increased by 59 percent from 2007 to 2008.
